Richie Hawtin created a unique techno sound, which is regarded as synonymous with the city of Detroit. That sound, electro house, is very minimal, yet highly danceable. He is known for his use of the Roland TB-303 bass machine and that sound has become inseparable from quality acid house and electro recordings. These days, Hawtin kicks around with a TR-909 drum machine. Hawtin signed a record deal with Nova Mute in 1993, and is considered a star in Europe, where he has enjoyed success with his project, Plastikman.
In 1994, rumor has it that Hawtin was scheduled to perform at a rave held inside the Brooklyn Bridge. Allegedly, while crossing the border from Canada, guards stopped him, assuming he was attempting to work illegally in the US due to the massive amount of equipment in his car. Supposedly he went home and recorded a set to DAT and shipped it to the promoters. To this day, no one can say for certain whether that headlining slot was live or on tape.
Today, he has gained the respect of a larger US audience. In May 2000, Hawtin performed at the first Detroit Electronic Festival alongside Derrick May, Juan Atkins and other techno masterminds. More than 200,000 people attended from all over the world.

Something about Loco Dice:
If you’ve seen Loco Dice perform at his ten-year-long Tribehouse residency in his hometown Düsseldorf, or at DC- 10 in Ibiza (from ’02-’06), you will have clicked to this. Loco Dice is someone, who can puzzle together intangible moods with a direct approach.

Via his DJ sets or his productions on labels like M_nus, Cadenza, Ovum, Four Twenty and Cocoon, he merges perspectives in his delicate sense for sounds and reflective atmospheres, underpinned with solid, physical grooves inspired by the hip hop that was his early sonic stomping ground in the mid- to late ‘90s. There’s something there for the dreamers, as well as for the 9-to-5ers who just want to lose everything in a moment of abandon on the dancefloor.

Don’t think that merging of perspectives is accidental. This Loco Dice, with his mercurial temperament, may let his thoughts run away with him, but he tends to chase those ideas and make them into an artistic reality. His DJ sets, whether at Germany’s biggest rave Timewarp, Cocoon in Ibiza or a beach party in South America, are spontaneous orchestrations fueled by the nuances of a night/venue/crowd. He began a fruitful studio partnership with Martin Buttrich in 2002 leading to tracks like Phatt Dope Shit, MeninaBrasiliera, and Seeing ThroughShadows, and Dice meticulously plans these productions.
It’s a directorial, cinematic outlook, which permeates Dice’s everyday life, and comes not just from the outlandish escapades and scrapes that he has sometimes found himself living out in real life. It also stems from elaborate film scripts imagined as a young Loco Dice on the streets of Flingern in Düsseldorf and the Kerkennah Islands in Tunisia. This continues to be a habit of Loco Dice’s today: to close his eyes for just one minute, and see a whole cornucopia of scenes and atmospheres.

As one manifestation of this, visitors to Düsseldorf were early 2008 able to see an exhibition of photographs taken by Loco Dice & Martin Buttrich during the year they spent in New York City to work on the Loco Dice album. It’s an album that re-imagines the soul of a city, built from careful observations of urban tribes that crisscross and sometimes clash, of minute details and sensory impressions.

Family is important to Loco Dice, as you might have noticed if you’ve seen one of his tattoos, a Chicano-style artwork with the legend “Guadelupe”. His love for music stems from hearing soul and funk in the kitchen, and holidays with his mother to Tunisia, where he absorbed North African and Middle Eastern folk music and occasionally sneaked away to watch his grandfather playing dice at café tables on the street. Family is how he’s always regarded the people close to him, and it’s how he regards subcultures too. As a football player, those who build strong teams of creative people around them inspire him.

Loco Dice

Biography of Marco Carola:
Marco Carola is the recognized global ambassador of Italian techno. It's a position he treats with the utmost care and respect—and one that stands him among the hallowed company of contemporary techno's leading practitioners. Hailing from Napoli in the south of the country, Marco was among a small group of DJs and promoters who quite literally built the city's scene from scratch back in the early-'90s. In 1995's First Planet EP he became the first Neopolitan artist to commit techno to vinyl, paving the way for an entire generation of producers. These days Marco is a mainstay of Richie Hawtin's Minus and Plus 8 labels, who, much like Marco himself, are one of the driving forces behind techno's permeation of the worldwide dance scene.

Napoli, 1993, and the enduring flame of the Italo house sound had begun to smolder. The young DJ Marco Carola had at this point been spinning house music for a number of years— but as commercial club music began to assert a stranglehold over Italy, and the hopelessly insular media of the country's north continues to shun the south, a change is afoot. Fuelled by a groundswell of local DJs, clubbers and promoters; visits from DJs like Richie Hawtin and Jeff Mills; and Napoli's long held propensity for underground music, the city's techno scene enters into its embryonic stage. Marco along with friends Davide Squillace, Gaetano Parisio, Danilo Vigorito, Rino Cerrone and Random Noize are at the vanguard of this early movement, and with no one outside of the city to take cues from, the Neopolitan scene becomes a force unto itself.

If they're doing their job properly every DJ will have a calling card, and as Marco puts it, he was "born" with a three-deck style of mixing. This fast and furious approach also lent itself to use of a sampler, which would later provide the grounding for Marco's work as a producer. By 1995 he had amassed a considerable body of music, but with no indigenous labels to put-out his creations, Marco was forced to take matters into his own hands. Design Music was set up with a humble aim: for people to experience the music of Marco Carola. But as sales on its initial release, First Planet, entered into the tens of thousands and Sven Vath became an ardent early supporter, it was clear Design, and by extension Carola, were set for far bigger things.

Aiding this ascent was Marco's concise approach to the release of music. The remainder of the '90s saw him establish the Zenit, Question and One Thousand labels—all with a clear musical aim, and, in the case of the latter, a defined number of releases. In 1998 he relocated to Frankfurt in order to further his advancement in the burgeoning techno scene. This new home base unlocked myriad opportunities for him to export his now famous three-deck style to clubs across the globe, although by 2001 he was already seeking a fresh challenge and thusly moved on to the electronic music stronghold of London. In retrospect the year proved to be pivotal. Marco released his second album, Open System (following on from 1998's The 1000 Collection), to widespread critical acclaim. Key German publication Groove deemed its multifarious, texturally rich approach to broken beats, techno and electronica worthy of their album of the year accolade.

Renewal: for a 20-year veteran such as Marco, shedding your creative skin and following your instincts are fundamental means of remaining relevant. By 2004 he had reached a plateau of sorts, and was torn. The harder techno sound he'd been pushing for so many years had elevated him to the scene's top tier, but inside he harboured a burning desire for musical upheaval; a lust for refinement, to slow things down and get back to the groove. Now residing back in Napoli, Marco began a process of reinvention, starting with a focus on bookings at smaller clubs with more underground sensibilities that better suited his new, more considered style and offered the opportunity to hone it over the course of longer, extended sessions. Domestic Minimal Noise was set-up as a bridge between the Marco Carola of old and new, evidenced by the label's pacey yet undoubtedly funk-fuelled output.

The encapsulation of this transformation came a couple of years later, however, as Marco reneged on his stance of not recording mix CDs (he always felt his three-deck, club-ready style was inappropriate for the form) and agreed to contribute to London club fabric's seminal mix series. Fabric 31 was a lesson in sleek, future-facing minimalism. The disc introduced Marco to an entirely new audience and clearly illustrated an artist revelling in a fresh creative perspective.

2007's Apena would also prove to be hugely significant. The release heralded his first collaboration with Richie Hawtin's Plus 8/Minus stable. This family environment has since established a platform from which Marco has been encouraged to express himself with unbridled creative freedom. The most widely recognized example of this was 2008's undeniable earworm "Bloody Cash" which garnered Plus 8 with one of that year's biggest techno tracks. Both Minus and Plus 8 have continued to host his 12-inch productions at regular intervals (Plus One, Plus Two and Walking Dog to name a few), and in 2M Marco has been granted his own sub-label (strictly limited to 2000 copies per release) to curate as he sees fit.

Ibiza has become more and more of a key destination for Marco through the years, and in 2010 this was solidified by his residency at Cocoon's Monday night Amnesia sessions. Party ringleader Sven Vath showed further faith in Marco by asking him to mix Cocoon's Party Animals CD alongside Nick Curly, building on the foundations laid down by Marco's double-disc Time Warp 2009 mix, which married the deeper house end of his range with his now trademark groove-ridden techno.

When it came to following up Open System Marco knew it must be with something exceptional. "I've been working like crazy on Play It Loud," he says on the travail behind his latest full-length. "I've never been working like this, not even when I was a kid and I wanted to be known!" The resulting album is the perfect amalgamation of Marco's DJ and production sensibilities. Play It Loud's 18 tracks are presented in mix form and explore what proved for Marco to be a highly fertile middle-ground between home listening and the dancefloor—a reduced tempo and complete creative license from Minus allowed Marco to burrow deeper into his sound than ever before. "I always try to do something new," he says. "When I produce, or when I DJ, I don't really think about where I want to go musically, I just start to feel."

Something about Exit Festival:
EXIT is the biggest music festival in Southeast Europe and has taken place at a beautiful and magical Petrovaradin fortress in Novi Sad, since 2001.
Apart from quality music program that it offers, the festival is a place of wild fun...
Year after year the number of visitors is getting bigger; young people come from different parts of the country and Europe. Apart from quality music program that it offers, the festival is a place of wild fun, and you can enjoy the cool atmosphere of the fortress and the positive energy of the city.

From its humble beginnings as a student initiated project against the Milosivic regime, EXIT is now gaining international recognition and defining the new generation of young people in Serbia. It’s more than just a festival as it’s an opportunity for young people to stand up for what they believe in and do so in a creative and positive way - and above all else to party long and hard with thousands of like minded people.

EXIT takes place in the historic Petrovaradin Fortress, which is built high on the banks of the River Danube and offers stunning views over the city of Novi Sad. The ancient fortress site was originally occupied by the Romans, and re-built by the Austro Hungarian Empire to defend against the Turks in the 17th Century.

The veteran Italian techno jock records his first podcast.
Marco Carola is quite simply one of the biggest in the business. The Neapolitan selector was there from the very beginning of Italy's love affair with techno, helping to kick-start the scene through extensive DJing, production and party promotion in his hometown. His message throughout the late-'90s/early-'00s was spread via a number of successful labels he founded—Zenit, One Thousand, Question—although the ascent towards his currently enjoyed level of fame seemed to begin around 2006/07 with the release of his excellent fabric mix and association with Minus/Plus 8. By this time Carola had quite drastically altered his approach from the frantic three-deck mixing style he previously employed, instead concentrating on stripping things down in search of the ultimate groove. However you look at this transitionary period, it most certainly worked for him: Carola now enjoys one of the busiest touring schedules on the circuit, regularly given top billing for some of the largest scale techno events in the world.

Carola's dedication to the rhythmic exploration is certainly apparent on his RA mix, although as he explains below, he allows a little more warmth and a lot more breathing room then you might ordinarily expect from hearing him pack a dancefloor.

What have you been up to recently?

I've been on my album release world tour, which started at home in Napoli in February. I've just finished some of the South American dates and a party at SXSW with Richie—and am currently in LA getting ready for the Miami parties this week.

How and where was the mix recorded?

I recorded it in my studio at home in Napoli using Traktor Scratch—that's what I use when I play out now, with two decks and the C-Loops machine to make longer mixes. I get asked a lot about the three-deck style I started out with for many years, but I eventually found that there was too much thinking about the technical side. The way I play now means I can think more about the music and where the set is going.

Can you tell us a little bit more about the idea behind the mix?

I recently did the BBC Essential Mix at the time of the album release in February. I was really pleased with how that turned out, but as that was a two-hour club-style set, I wanted to do something that was a little more relaxed for this. I recorded it during a short break in the tour dates a couple of weeks ago—I try to always play new tracks in my sets, so these are ones I was into at that time.

You're credited as helping to kick-start the Italian techno scene during the '90s. How would you assess the scene in 2011?

Back when I started, Napoli was really the only real techno scene in Italy. Rome had a scene, but that was more of a rave style. You could say that in the beginning it was perhaps more contained, but now it's opened up and there are great parties put on by amazing people around the whole country. I think it's great, I always love to play in Italy—Italian crowds have so much energy, so if you play well they really love you.

Do you see your particular brand of techno as being divisive? Certainly online it seems to evoke very strong reactions for and against it.

Well one of the best things about techno is that the people are so passionate about it. Perhaps sometimes some people forget that the purpose of it is to have fun and to dance, though. There's room for all kinds of styles—my style is not going to be loved by everybody, but that's OK because I'm just expressing who I am, what I like to play and hear in the club. My music is quite specific, it's made to be played by DJs in clubs—pretty much everything on the album was tested this way so I could see what was successful and what I needed to work on some more. And the reason the album comes as a mix is that it makes more sense for the music to be heard played as part of a DJ set than individual tracks.

That's why I called the album Play It Loud!, because without that context of being played by a DJ it's not going to make sense. My music is about the groove, the bassline—if you can't feel that, if you listen to it on some laptop speakers with no bass, you're not going to get it! So it's great for people to have those strong reactions and to be passionate—just don't forget to have fun!

What are you up to next?

The album tour continues with more European dates from the beginning of April. There are the festivals like Timewarp and Exit, and of course there will be Ibiza too which I am always excited to do. And after the tour hopefully some new EPs on 2M later this year.
