What is the BPM Festival, Sixth Edition?
The BPM Festival returns to Playa del Carmen from January 4 – 13, 2013 for its sixth year. After the smash success of last year’s milestone fifth anniversary, The BPM Festival continues its tradition of bringing the world’s best DJs to one of the most alluring party hotspots on the planet.
Unlike other festivals, The BPM festival is a 10-day celebration of music while offering all the stunning attractions and adventures of the Mayan Riviera. One can enjoy dance beats both day and night at multiple venues at a relaxed pace with ample time to discover the sparkling turquoise Caribbean waters, white sand beaches, mysterious jungles and ancient ruins.

The BPM Festival is an annual world-class electronic music festival in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico held at the beginning of the calendar year. Originally conceived as an elite dance music industry-networking event, the festival has morphed into a international mélange of electronic music lovers, DJs, producers, and party professionals. He has his fans in the most important clubs across the globe as well as at the world’s biggest festivals, he toured South America and played in the Thai jungle, and he is cultural ambassador of the German Goethe Institute. On the dance floor, he unites thirty-five-year-olds with fifteen-year-olds. His Cocoon network is home to the booking agency Cocoon Artist Booking, the event agency Cocoon Events and the record label Cocoon Recordings – three very important components of the electronic music scene that are both innovative and independent.

In Ibiza, the Cocoon events belong to the most successful parties for years, due to their sharp musical and artistic profile. In the year 2004, six years after the closing of the ground-breaking Omen club (whose artistic motor Sven Väth had been), he started a new era of club-life in Germany and opened the cocoonclub in Frankfurt, setting new standards in design, conception and music. Two restaurants, a Michelin-star awarded chef and the elite of the international DJ guild guarantee a high-class entertainment experience.

In 2003 the "Fire Works" Tour is highly successful and wherever Sven plays, he leaves behind a happy and enthusiastic audience, may it be in Europe, Asia or America. Besides his numerous bookings in this time, Sven is mainly busy with the conception of the Fourth Season of the Cocoon Club in Ibiza. However, another event casts its shadows: the Green&Blue Open Air at the Waldschwimmbad Atlantis in Obertshausen near Frankfurt. The Ibiza Season turns out to be the most successful Cocoon event series on the island so far and the last party 'The Final' on September, 15th of 2003 literally ends it with a Bang! The Green&Blue Party is the last Open Air event of the year in Germany and represents something very special for Sven: for the first time in his career, he plays in his hometown Obertshausen. The idea for this rather unique event originally came from the local authorities and Sven and his company Cocoon were prepared to listen. Not only was the Waldschwimmbad Atlantis the perfect place for the Green&Blue, it also provided the name for the party: the vast lawn and the old trees created a perfect contrast to the blue water of the basins. For Sven, it was both a comeback to the place where he learned to swim as well as a reunion with many friends from back then. In October 2003, the Mix CD "The Sound of the Fourth Season" is released on Cocoon Recordings as a double CD and hit the German Compilation charts on No. 15.

Sven Väth (born 26 October 1964 near Frankfurt, Germany) is a DJ who has produced an extensive range of work since his career began in 1982. He was also one of the founders of legendary trance music labels Harthouse and the now-defunct Eye Q, as well as being among the very first DJs to play trance records. In 1995 Mixmag rated his album Accident in Paradise one of the top-50 dance albums of all time; although the title track is a fast techno piece, the rest is far more sedate, such as the track "Coda," which features merely a flute and a harpsichord.

Väth is also known as R U Ready and Sam Vision. He has been a member of the groups 16 Bit, Astral Pilot, Barbarella, the Essence of Nature, Metal Master, Metal Masters, Mosaic, and Off. Today he is the owner of the Cocoon Music Event GmbH, which contains his new Label, Cocoon Recordings. He is also the owner of the Cocoon Club in Frankfurt.

Biografia de Sven Vath:
Uno de los Djs más conocidos en Alemania -meritorio honor se lo disputaría a Dj Hell- y, por supuesto, entre los aficionados al clubbing español. Väth comenzó a ser famoso en Alemania en los años 80. Desde entonces ha participado en los grandes eventos de música electrónica de todo el mundo. En los últimos años ha dedicado mucho más tiempo a la composición y que han dado como resultado su último disco Fusion, publicado en enero del 98 pero que aún hoy es usado por muchos Djs. Es una mezcla (como su propio nombre indica) de distintos estilos musicales como el techno, el trance y otros ritmos mucho más suaves. El resultado fue un espléndido disco que puede ser escuchado tanto en el salón de casa como en un club. Alemania fue uno de los países donde más éxito tenía el trance. Buena culpa de ello la ha tenido Sven Väth con sus sesiones en Frankfurt de Omen, y sobretodo 1988, el año del acid y de su debut en la cabina del club de Frankfurt, dos datos que se repiten en todas y cada una de sus biografías. Y es que Vath ha mantenido vivo este tipo de música en discotecas del resto de Alemania, Bélgica u Holanda cuando en otros países parecía haber desaparecido. 

Su reconocidísima misión "ONG salvemos el trance" es muy loable, pero no sería justo olvidarse de su proyecto Off con el sacudió las pistas de baile en 1986 –por esa época se llamaban discotecas no clubs- que gracias a un hit chusco pero acertado y vervenero como Electrica Salsa (Baba Baba) en la que el mismo Dj ponía voz vacilona. Corte petardo y salsero que poco hacía prever su futura pasión por el trance. Unos lustros más tarde repetiría un experimento semejante junto a Miss Kittin con la que interpretó el libidinoso Je t'aime… moi non plus(Virgin Schallplatten) con bastante poca gracia, por cierto. En cuanto a producciones más serias destaca su Accident in Paradise de 1993 que firmó para una major como Warner Brothers y en el que el mantra trancero recubría cada una de sus temas. 

Cuando Väth se cansa del frío centroeuropeo coge el avión y se va a Ibiza a pinchar a las fiestas Cocoon que recientemente han tenido lugar en el Amnesiaibicenco. Allí se le ha podido ver pinchar y "actuar" a su antojo, como si estuviera en su casa, al lado de Miss Kittin o Richie Hawtin, con quien se le ha visto en numerosas ocasiones. ¿Será Vath el responsable del nuevo look y corte de pelo de Plastikman? Hagan sus apuestas. Su agencia Cocoon anuncia cada primavera su inminente aterrizaje en Amnesia de Ibiza. Para los que quieran saber que hizo Sven Väth durante su último verano tienen buena muestra de ello en su último CD mix, The sound of the fourth session (Cocoon Recordings). Parece ser que el alemán se está convirtiendo a la causa minimal ahora que sus neuronas empiezan a aterrizar después de una época de desbarajustes en cabina que habían amenazado su carrera a los platos. El inevitable The sound of the fifth session de final de verano nos descubre a un Väth que se mueve entre el sonido de proyectos con bajos potentes muy a la última como Basteroid o Gabriel Ananda combinados con sus recursos rockotronicos en plan !!! o Blackstrobe. La serie de recopilatorios se convierte de este modo en una institución para los amantes de los sonidos ibicencos. Hasta que en 2009 las noches Cocoon cumplen diez años en Ibiza y Sven decide sacar un recopilatorio que se repartía gratuitamente junto a la revista Mixmag titulado Ten Years of Cocoon en el que se incluían algunos de los hits de esas fiestas como el Like A Child (Carl Craig Remix), Diabla (Funk D'Void's Heavenly Mix) o el Marionette de Mathew Jonson.

Biography of Loco Dice:
Every so often a DJ or producer comes along who inspires the collective imagination.

If you’ve seen Loco Dice perform at his ten-year-long Tribehouse residency in his hometown Düsseldorf, or at DC- 10 in Ibiza (from ’02-’06), you will have clicked to this. Loco Dice is someone, who can puzzle together intangible moods with a direct approach.

Via his DJ sets or his productions on labels like M_nus, Cadenza, Ovum, Four Twenty and Cocoon, he merges perspectives in his delicate sense for sounds and reflective atmospheres, underpinned with solid, physical grooves inspired by the hip hop that was his early sonic stomping ground in the mid- to late ‘90s. There’s something there for the dreamers, as well as for the 9-to-5ers who just want to lose everything in a moment of abandon on the dancefloor.

Don’t think that merging of perspectives is accidental. This Loco Dice, with his mercurial temperament, may let his thoughts run away with him, but he tends to chase those ideas and make them into an artistic reality. His DJ sets, whether at Germany’s biggest rave Timewarp, Cocoon in Ibiza or a beach party in South America, are spontaneous orchestrations fueled by the nuances of a night/venue/crowd. He began a fruitful studio partnership with Martin Buttrich in 2002 leading to tracks like Phatt Dope Shit, MeninaBrasiliera, and Seeing ThroughShadows, and Dice meticulously plans these productions.
It’s a directorial, cinematic outlook, which permeates Dice’s everyday life, and comes not just from the outlandish escapades and scrapes that he has sometimes found himself living out in real life. It also stems from elaborate film scripts imagined as a young Loco Dice on the streets of Flingern in Düsseldorf and the Kerkennah Islands in Tunisia. This continues to be a habit of Loco Dice’s today: to close his eyes for just one minute, and see a whole cornucopia of scenes and atmospheres.

As one manifestation of this, visitors to Düsseldorf were early 2008 able to see an exhibition of photographs taken by Loco Dice & Martin Buttrich during the year they spent in New York City to work on the Loco Dice album. It’s an album that re-imagines the soul of a city, built from careful observations of urban tribes that crisscross and sometimes clash, of minute details and sensory impressions.

Family is important to Loco Dice, as you might have noticed if you’ve seen one of his tattoos, a Chicano-style artwork with the legend “Guadelupe”. His love for music stems from hearing soul and funk in the kitchen, and holidays with his mother to Tunisia, where he absorbed North African and Middle Eastern folk music and occasionally sneaked away to watch his grandfather playing dice at café tables on the street. Family is how he’s always regarded the people close to him, and it’s how he regards subcultures too. As a football player, those who build strong teams of creative people around them inspire him.

This sense of family is what he wants to create with projects like his and Buttrich’s label Desolat, and an artist management agency he run with Tom Preuss called Artist Alife. When you visit the office of Desolat and Artist Alife, you’re struck by the fact that everyone seems to come from a different cultural background. Loco Dice’s experience of Germany is one that includes friends and collaborators, who are of African, Eastern European, Italian or Turkish descent. Loco Dice is interested in all kinds of people and artistic subcultures: he’s proud of people, who bring a creative flair to what they do, informed by lives lived ever so slightly less ordinary.

In that sense, Dice’s innate understanding of people: what they sense, what they feel, what they want to imagine, is a part of what distinguishes him from other DJs. He’s very aware when playing in Ibiza of the multiplicity of nationalities that are gathered there, the morass of different desires to be catered to. His inner film scriptwriter makes him capable of translating sounds and kicking it like a local, whether it’s in Naples or in New York. Loco Dice is similarly capable of inspiring, of creating that heady atmosphere that can only be experienced in a crowd of thousands. This skill of his, first cultivated at DC-10, is also no doubt informed by his experiences touring with big name hip hop artists in the ‘90s.

Mark Spoon used to promise him that at some point Loco Dice would shuffle sideways from his beloved house and hip hop to “come over and be one of us”, one of the techno believers. In a sense, he was right, though Loco Dice never leaves anything behind: he still brings out classics, whether classic techno from Maurizio to Basic Channel or gritty boompty house by DJ Sneak, and he’s still fond of composing music, as linear as it may be, that draws on hip hop song structures and basslines. At the end of the day, as Loco Dice sees it, everything runs in loops, and it’s his job to trace a line, to sketch out the next scenes in this soundtrack.

Even if life tends to be unpredictable, a little chancey, the next move doesn’t have to be a gamble. In fact, Loco Dice shows via his compositions that it can be very well planned. Listen to his music, imagine the cinematic accompaniments, and you’ll understand how something carefully constructed can begin with a flight of fancy, or a roll of the dice.
