Hawtin created a unique techno sound, which is regarded as synonymous with the city of Detroit. That sound, electro house, is very minimal, yet highly danceable. He is known for his use of the Roland TB-303 bass machine and that sound has become inseparable from quality acid house and electro recordings. These days, Hawtin kicks around with a TR-909 drum machine. Hawtin signed a record deal with Nova Mute in 1993, and is considered a star in Europe, where he has enjoyed success with his project, Plastikman.
In 1994, rumor has it that Hawtin was scheduled to perform at a rave held inside the Brooklyn Bridge. Allegedly, while crossing the border from Canada, guards stopped him, assuming he was attempting to work illegally in the US due to the massive amount of equipment in his car. Supposedly he went home and recorded a set to DAT and shipped it to the promoters. To this day, no one can say for certain whether that headlining slot was live or on tape.
Today, he has gained the respect of a larger US audience. In May 2000, Hawtin performed at the first Detroit Electronic Festival alongside Derrick May, Juan Atkins and other techno masterminds. More than 200,000 people attended from all over the world.

Although he's technically a Canadian, Richie Hawtin will forever be associated with putting his beloved Detroit on the dance music map. Along with fellow Detroit pioneer Carl Craig, Hawtin helped break the second wave of Detroit techno. From north of Detroit in Windsor, Ontario, Hawtin has been a DJ, a producer, a record label owner, and a flag-waver for the underground Detroit scene which is only now getting the respect it deserves in the United States. Hawtin started his career DJing at underground parties in clubs like Detroit's Shelter. There he met his partner, John Acquaviva, and together they launched the influential Plus 8 Recordings label.

In 2009 alone Beltram had a Beatport top 10 with his remix of Oliver Huntemann's Shanghai Spinner. Then there was his huge vinyl releases like the Scorpion on Drumcode, Shaking Trees on Harthouse (a Raveline track of the month), and a killer remix of Abe Duque's Let's Take It Back that had rave reactions across the board including MANDY, Dave Clarke and Hell. There was also his run of headline slots at festivals, which in 08/09 has included Coachella, both of Italy's Play the Music Festivals, BLOC in the UK, Hungary's Bonusz, Awakenings, Planetlove Ireland and Rockit Open Air in the Netherlands, plus club gigs from Berghain to the 10,000 capacity Fabrik in Madrid to Fabric UK's sister club matter, Ministry of Sound and numerous appearances in Germany, the US, Spain, Holland, Canada, Malta and more. Check out the videos of huge festival crowds on YouTube.
What’s his secret? Continued experimentation and an unparalleled run of influential tracks. Beltram grew up in Queens, one of the toughest boroughs of New York - the equal to Detroit for rough times but very different in its musical roots. At 12 years old Beltram was DJing hip hop and electro, playing roller rinks and block parties to buy records, studio gear and decks. He released his first tracks before age 18 on New York labels Nu Groove and Easy Street, and by 20 he caught the ear of Belgium's now pivotal R&S label with his track Let It Ride.
R&S invited Beltram to Europe and techno history was made. Beltram arrived with a new track he'd completed a week before travelling. Energy Flash, released on R&S in Europe and Derrick May's Transmat in the US, is still one of techno's pivotal classics - Muzik Magazine's Track of the Decade, and a track whose title has named any number of record stores and books on dance culture. Energy Flash and its follow up Mentasm with Mundo Muzique made Beltram's name and took the 21-year-old right round the world, playing major events in the UK,
Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Germany and holding down a residency at the notorious Limelight in New York.
Not content to rest, Beltram has continually toured at the major festivals around the globe treating the crowds to the full force of his inspiring sets. He’s also continued releasing seminal tracks, his '93 and '94 tracks Aonox on Visible and "the Beltram re-releases" on Trax, the Caliber EP on the UK's legendary Warp (home of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher), and his '95 LP Places and '96 single Ball Park on Tresor were huge hits - each being one of the biggest techno records of that year, along with the LP following, Close Grind on Novamute, with the pivotal releases Believer and Forklift.
In '99, he launched his own label STX with Arena, while he continued to release under Code 6 and JB³, as well as headlining events like Awakenings, Coachella, Nature One, Mayday and Dance Valley. Returning to Tresor in '04, his album Rising Sun included several of that year's biggest techno releases. And he has kept the innovative tracks coming since on Womb, Harthouse, Drumcode, MB Electroniks, and Bush.
Which brings us to 2010, this is the year STX will return, both as a label and a touring show, with Beltram having put the call out to the cream of European and US techno producers to join him. Beltram will continue
with the festival headline slots, but an intimate club tour is planned for venues with the right soundsystems...

Magda is an artist who can never be pinned down, no matter the timeframe or time signature. Any one of the Detroit-raised/Berlin-based artist's DJ sets or productions breeds a rare feel of mystique and discovery. "I'm really obsessed with finding a line between things - between sounds and between genres. My influences come from a life spent in very different environments, which plays a huge role in the way I connect with music."
Dramatic sounds and eccentric basslines carry her multilayered sound, which veers everywhere from funked-out space disco to the intricately-programmed, metallic feel of Detroit to stripped down techno, all the way to Italian horror film soundtracks. The only thing that remains consistent is the element of surprise.
Her accidental entry into Detroit's underground party scene as a teenager was the kick-start she needed for a lifelong love affair. Soon all became a blur of "cities, record stores, and parties." In 1998, she joined Minus and began touring the world as Richie Hawtin's sole opener. From there, her distinctive sound began to develop and the rest is history.
Stylistically, Magda grooves through opposition - creating sets that are emotion-led yet clinical, having profound expertise with analog and digital technology. Her sound is otherworldly but visceral; dark with a warm sense of beauty and grace; sparse yet wondrously full-bodied with density and bass-swathed extremes. Magda's DJing style has been encapsulated on her mixed CDs 'She's A Dancing Machine,' and her mix for London club Fabric 'Fabric 49' (a mix CD with as much artistry and vision as an original album).
In the fall of 2010, Magda revealed her debut, 'From The Fallen Page,' a darkly- tinged, transportive album that curiously combines natural, organic sounds, and modern electronic grace. Similar to her unpredictable DJ sets, 'From The Fallen Page' took listeners from one end of the spectrum to the other, treading the fine lines of extremities along the way.
These days, though living in Berlin, Magda isn't home very often. In-between touring, she's fully focused on her recently resurrected label 'Items & Things.' The label's vision always pinpoints the off-kilter and the uncommon, seeking out new artists and sounds that push boundaries. "Items and things are bits and pieces of uniqueness we come across. The label is a platform to launch the music that we love. There are no rules, just sounds we like and artists we believe in."

Birmingham techno artist Anthony Child has rapidly built a solid and, to a certain extent, innovative catalog of minimal dancefloor techno since his Surgeon releases began appearing in 1991. Compared favorably with Detroit original Jeff Mills from his earliest Downwards singles on forward, Child's tracks have been a mainstay in the popular Motor City DJ's sets. Although Surgeon releases have worked an increasing affectation for acid and trance, an economy of sound and basic hardness combine his and Mills' sound.
A noted and increasingly popular DJ himself, Child grokked his skills from hip-hop and electro jocks ("Tour de France" is a mainstay of his DJ sets), filling out his style with a driving toughness and appreciation for rapid cutting and flipping. Surgeon's entry into production was also noteworthy; urged on by producer Mick Harris (Child is a fan of Harris' Scorn project), the former Napalm Death drummer locked Child in his tiny studio, imploring him to "go mad." The result, the self-titled debut EP, was released on Downwards, and was instantly hailed as some of the highest quality U.K. techno of its time. Releases for Soma, Blueprint, Ideal Trax, and the ultra-exclusive Tresor label followed, with the debut LP, Basic Tonal Vocabulary, appearing on Tresor in 1997. Balance followed in 1998, as did Force & Form in 1999.
More recent additions to his repertoire include releases on his Counterbalance imprint as well as collaborations with Regis as British Murder Boys, resulting in tracks which take a tone far darker, denser, and more industrial than those from his Tresor years.
Equally influenced by early electro-pop innovators like Tomita and YMO, experimental groups like Can, Faust, and Suicide, and the tough grit of American electro and techno (Robert Hood, Hashim), Surgeon's mash-up is both straightforward and subtly experimental. Further influences from Coil, Psychic TV, and Whitehouse in recent works and DJ appearences do not go unnoticed.

Musically, he is hard to categorize as he is as comfortable with downtempo as he is with house and techno. On all of the projects he's taken on he's explored new sounds and styles, always looking for the next best thing. His strength as a DJ comes from the many years he's had behind the decks. Since 1992 he's invented his own vision and his own way of manipulating and delivering what crowds want at any time of the night, morning, or afternoon.

His seamless, yet effortless style has cemented him as one of the best DJ's for starting the night off, which many will say about his days as a Twilo resident. It was here that Jimmy teamed up with Sasha and John Digweed to bring a new style of clubbing to the masses. A night of adventure became years of fun, which in turn became a tour. Delta Heavy was the first and only rockstar DJ Tour to take place in America with Jimmy as the warm-up. He eased everything into place perfectly, setting the mood with his finesse and finest tunes. As brilliant of a warm up DJ as he is, he still knows how to deliver peaktime slots in the biggest clubs around the world. His control and patience can be felt on the dancefloor as he brings the energy to a new place with each new record. He knows how to push and pull in all the right directions to send your body and mind into frenzy and back. Jimmy has also established himself as a gifted producer in the studio. Creating sounds with collaborators and friends that finds itself in the vast and varied range of house music.

As with the music he picks, the music he makes carries a complexity, sparkle and beauty in it. The time and effort he puts in to deliver the newest and most innovative projects best he can, takes the sort of creative originality that only Jimmy Van M possesses. When it comes to atmosphere, vibe and drive there are very few DJs that can stand alongside Jimmy Van M. Whether it’s putting together a cross-country tour, programming innovative and forward thinking dance music or DJing to thunderous masses anywhere from Buenos Aires to Tokyo he is one of the most characteristic performers to be found anywhere.

The Northern Exposure American Tour 1996, Twilo resident 1996-2000 and Delta Heavy 2001 is to name just a few of the residency or tour events that he has participated in as an artist... Global Gathering 2004, the 25,000 person NYE Millennium in Melbourne, Australia, the first ever Creamfields Russia as well as Creamfields Buenos Aires with 55,000 people in attendance would make up the short-list of some of the most important one-off performance events to ever happen globally within electronic dance music that he has also performed in.

But this tells only part of the story. It was Jimmy’s formative years at his house in Orlando, Florida where things really fell together for him as a DJ. To list all of the artists who played at his house in those early years would be to index the most famous and notorious dj’s globally, as well as hordes of friends that just came by with a bag of new records. For years and years the only residency that interested Jimmy, or most any other dj on any given Sunday, was his home address. These after-parties still get mentioned and name-checked by most anybody that happened to come through town on a whirlwind tour of his cul-de-sac. It was here that Jimmy really developed his very patterned style of playing, layering endlessly characteristic and suggestive tracks for anybody that happened to stop by. These unending Sundays resulted in one of the most artful and layered mixing styles to be found anywhere. From those humble beginnings he took that playing style and his taste for ever-changing and advanced styles of dance music from that notorious little neighborhood to the far reaches of the globe

Jimmy Van M has built a reputation on being among the most patient and sophisticated DJs to be found globally…from his opening sets to his peak-time club sessions and all the way through to the after-hours parties that he’s become so famous for. His ability to deliver music ranging from the deepest of early morning sessions to the most banging and driving peak-hour main-room affairs has placed him in seemingly unlimited and ever-delightful company throughout the world. It remains as one of the most distinguishing features of this very urbane and global performer that, for him, the music must move and then move on.

So will we be seeing Dave Clarke behind the decks at art-fashion electro clubs like Nag Nag Nag soon? "I’ve got nothing to do with that scene," says Clarke. "I find it really funny that I was one of the first DJs to bring attention to this music and I’ve never been asked to play in those clubs. I prefer League of Gentlemen clubs anyway, local clubs for local people." Although he will be taking the heavy sounds of Devil’s Advocate live, debuting his set at Creamfields. "It’ll be me doing my thing, but in a punky live way.

Devil’s Advocate is an adrenalised album, cherry-picking the best of the last three decades and hammering it into a record laden with funk, groove and attitude. Take highlight ‘Dirtbox’ a totally rude boy, death-disco moment with a narcotic bassline to knock your socks off. He’s also pulled Chicago house lynchpin DJ Rush into the record, on the jack-track blastin‘ opener ‘Way Of Life’. It’s a tune that Clarke has road tested over the last twelve months, at clubs worldwide, from Portugal to Sao Paulo.

"It’s a statement of intent," he says. "I’d got so fucked off with people ripping of my Red (Clarke’s Red 1, 2 and 3 provided three of dance musics most recognisable anthems) stabs that I thought I’d rip myself off one last time. Rush came over, gave me two hours of vocals which I cut and pasted into a single song." He also corralled politicized Indie hip hop head Mr Lif onto the record. "I saw him at the ICA and thought he was great. He comes from the heart." Lif’s track, a screeching, slo-motion story of death and resurrection titled ‘Blue On Blue’ highlight’s Clarke’s hip hop roots and moves the record further away from the house and techno that Dave Clarke is best known for. "That’s another reason I called it Devil’s Advocate" explains Clarke. "The music will challenge people’s preconceptions about me. If you’re unaware of my first album or my remixes then you might think that my whole life revolves around techno. It doesn’t."

Clarke is indeed a man of many sounds but he’s undeniably an international techno ambassador of the highest degree. He’s been criss-crossing the globe every weekend for the last fifteen years playing the best in funky electronic music. "Funny enough I’ve shied away from electro in my sets at the moment," he says. "There just aren’t the records right now. I still play a lot of ghetto booty electro though. I like it. It’s filthy, it’s got a charm and it’s got the funk."

Having the funk matters. Whether it’s funk shaped like a jacking Chicago house party, or funk shaped like a post-punk b-line (Clarke’s favorite new band, incidentally, are Radio Four) it’s here. There’s even a reggae track, hidden away at the end, which was inspired by a fortuitous meeting in London’s equipment mecca, Funky Junk. "I was talking to the guy behind the counter, saying that the only reggae I could relate to was Mad Professor because it’s so precise but really laid-back. He was like ‘Have you met him? He’s standing right behind you.’

But what about the cliched version of Dave Clarke, the opinionated, cigar-chomping gourmet speeding around in fast cars? He’s still there, in the background, and, currently driving a double-glazed Mercedes S500, "for hacking up and down on motorways" which makes PJ Harvey’s Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea sound "amazing" plus a brightly colored Honda NSX. "I do smoke cigars, I do like fast cars and I do wear black, but there’s more to me than that." You want to see past the cartoon? Just take one listen to Devils Advocate and it’ll all become crystal.

Something about Chris Liebing:
Chris Liebing had his first Residency as a DJ in a small club called "Red Brick" 1991 in Giessen, near Frankfurt. There he was playing all sorts of music from Soul, Hip Hop and Pop to House. In 1993, buying his records at Downtown Records in Giessen, he discovered the more electronic side of music, and one year later, he decided to open up a Techno Club, called "Spinclub".
Already beginning of 1995 the club had to close down and Chris began working for Eye -Q Records in Frankfurt. During that period, he met his friend and partner Andre Walter. Together they started to built up a studio and worked on music. Later that year, the first record on Global Ambition was released. Also together with Tommy Bingel from Downtown Records and Toni Rios, they founded the house Label SOAP.

Various Records and Remixes were released, like Traveller on Harthouse, Noosa Heads and E.H.R. on Soap, Strictly Ryth, and others.

In November 1995, Chris had a chance to play at the OMEN in Frankfurt and shortly after became Resident DJ. About a year later, influenced by his DJ-ing, he created "fine Audio Recordings" together with Under Cover Music Group. Chris gained first worldwide recognition with releases like Audio 07 and Audio 11.

Between 1978 and 1999 he hosted his weekly radioshow on Evosonic Radio. Very much happened then in 1999, Chris played the first time for the U60311 and started his Residency every first Friday of a month with " Es ist Freitagaaabend…!", playing along with his favourite DJ´s and Live Acts from around the world.

He joined the Cocoon Agency in Frankfurt to take care of his growing Booking Schedule and also in that same year, he moved on with his Labelwork and created his own Recordcompany "CLR". From then on the Labels CLR, Clretry, CLAU, Stigmata and Soap were distributed by Prime in England.

Since August 2000 you can hear Chris and Pauli Steinbach in their "Pitch Control" on HR XXL every Thursday night.

In may 2001 he mixed this double CD and started working on his Album for CLR which will hopefully bereleased within the following year.

In 2002 he left Cocoon Booking to manage the Booking Schedule by himself. From now CLR is taking care also of his bookings.

Biography of Heron:
Many times, biographies of techno acts start by singing their praise of an extremely early, extraordinary talent on synthesizers and other electronic devices. In Heron’s case, things are different: Because Martin Spittel has been shaped musically since his childhood, the influences were as diverse as music can be. On one side, there was his grandfather, who played various instruments, and to whom young Martin related closest to and whose influence still lasts until today. On the other side there were his cousins who were not much older than himself, enthusiastic about AC/DC, and band members themselves. Over the course of the following years, he explored the diversity of Black, Death and Trash Metal, EBM and Industrial, right up to Detroit Techno.

Ever since then, Heron's environment served as compensation to fierce parties and expanding his musical horizon. This symbiosis from the love of nature and the musical influences from his early childhood are a direct reflection of Heron’s entire life. Following the scream of the waders (limicoline birds), he moved to picturesque island Norderney in 2005. There, exploring the island’s national park, he decided to live up to his enthusiasm about nature by going to study landscape ecology at the University of Münster. It turned out: The relocation to Münster was the initial spark for his career; the months in Norderney were inspiration for the name of his label “Limikola” which was founded in late 2008 and now enjoys enormous support by both DJs and fans.

After launching his now very successful °Schaltkreis-parties with four friends in mid-2007, everything went quickly: His first own radio show “The Grasshopper Warbler”, contacts to prominent players like Someone Else and Heartthrob, and finally the moment in early 2008 during the season’s opening at Time Warp, when Richie Hawtin played all three tracks from Heron’s Retro EP. It was merely his second EP, released on a netlabel (Minisome), and it became immediately successful. A knightly accolade. The two have been in touch regularly since.

The journey that Heron started lead to his bombshell track “Welcome to the Adventure Club” that charted in the Beatport charts in 2008, and continued with remixes and releases for Synewave, Supdub, Swap, micro.fon, Prosthetic Pressings and Sleaze Records. In 2010, it culminated with a tour across North America during the summer.

In 2011 his label Limikola started getting bigger - including a huge support by remixers like Troy Pierce, Heartthrob, Miro Pajic and lots of more.

Besides this project other ideas grew up, the focus on his old school roots got more and more strong. With remixes for Damon Wild's Techno classic "Avion", Tim Grothe and Ziel100 he showed the crowd where he comes from.

Upcoming releases on DJ Pierre's label Afro Acid - Chicago's Acid House legend - , Hans Bouffmyhre's label Sleaze are already on the schedule - and much more stuff is coming up ...

Something about Josh Wink:
In 1990, Josh met up with a kindred spirit, fellow Philly jock, King Britt whose interests also include rap and acid jazz. Pooling their interests and blending their differences, the duo waxed E-culture's "Tribal Confusion" for respected New York based indie label, Strictly Rhythm. The record was a surprising commercial success and established both DJs as artists to watch on the global dance music scene.

After forming Ovum Recordings as an independent label in October 1994 with partner King Britt, Josh recorded the cult classic "Liquid Summer". He went on to release singles for a wide variety of revered European labels ranging from Belgium's R & S to England's XL. He also began remixing for Moby and others.

1995 was an especially good year for Josh. He scored 3 consecutive European smashes - all out of his modest 16-track bedroom studio - which unquestionably took dance music to a dizzying plateau. First came "Don't Laugh" - recorded as Winx and issued via Nervous Records - where Josh took a minimal techno beat and looped an incessant sample of a whacko laughing his head off. It was a stroke of sheer genius. The single broke down international language barriers and eventually sold more than 500,000 units.

Invitations to spin at prestigious nightspots all over the world have been pouring in since, but as his career has progressed, he has stayed true to his roots, never selling out and always maintaining his integrity, always coming home to his beloved Philadelphia.

Biography of Joris Voorn:
By the end of 2000 Joris began building a small studio to produce his own music, which led to his first release called 'muted trax pt.1' on Keynote. His first EP was massive success, filling the record boxes of Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier, DJ Rush and Technasia. In 2003 'Lost memories Pt.1' was released on Technasia's SINO label and was followed by 'Lost memories Pt.2' containing the anthem 'Incident' which was heard on dancefloors around the world.

After the success of 'Incident', Voorn released his debut cd album called 'Future History' on the Sino label. Encompassing 3 years of ideas and inspiration, the cd contains 20 diverse tracks, a seamless soundscape that represents his arrival as one of the most relevant techno producers of this time.

In the summer of 2005 Joris Voorn's new personal outlet called 'green' saw the light of day. 'A dedicated mind' was released as the first EP, which garnered success globally. He also completed his debut DJ mix CD for the Fuse club in Belgium. After Dave Clarke, DJ Hell and Technasia, Fuse presented Joris Voorn to mix part 4 of their international resident's dj mix albums. The mix contained over 40 tracks of timeless techno music mixed with the help of Ableton Live for its endless mixing and editing possibilities.

In 2006 the sophomore release under Voorn's Green label, named 'MPX_309', was a crossover techno work that was played out by techno, minimal, house and trance DJs. During the same year Voorn created his second album, released worldwide in June 2007. This new piece of work called 'From a deep place' featured many different styles of electronic music, ranging from atmospheric interludes to broken beats, house and deep soulful techno.

The focus point of the 'From a deep place' CD has been the listener rather than the dancer and was received
enthusiastically by the electronic music community. Some of the works were edited to more dj friendly tracks for the vinyl release of the album. During the summer of 2007 Joris has been touring with his new live performance in support of his album release.

More recently, Joris has been focusing on collaborative efforts producing remixes for respected and diverse artists such as Robert Babicz, Nic Fanciulli, Slam, Steve Angello, Sebo K and Jerome Sydenham. The 'Dark Flower Magnolia Mix' for Robert Babicz turned out to be another summer anthem in electronic dance music, and was a favourite of DJ's like Sven Vath, Dubfire, Pete Tong and John Digweed among many others.

In 2008, following the success of his resident advisor podcast, Joris was invited to produce episode 14 of the Balance DJ mix CD series from Australia. Following in the footsteps of James Holden and Lee Burridge, Joris constructed a layered and seamless mix of electronic dance music on a double CD. An epic mix in the very best sense of the word, Balance 014 achieves the rare feat of combining variety and consistency, making it perfect for trainspotters and dancers alike. The tracks change quickly and quietly, but the groove stays. An accompanying world tour will follow where Joris will bring the essence of this studio project to the stage, using all different elements of the mix into a full range club experience.

Having established himself as a leading producer and DJ, Joris will be embarking on a new project called 'A green night'. Inspired by his surroundings, which is never limited to the dancefloor, Joris and his team will be creating a night in several festivals and clubs, exploring the possibilities of combining music and visual arts. This year the project will be developed, tested and finetuned in selected clubs.

As a DJ and live performer Joris Voorn has joined an elite group of international DJ's whose musical talent has acquired global appeal. He has performed across Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Austsralia, Russia, Brazil, Colombia, Israel, Detroit, Chicago and New York.

Something about Sven Vath:
Sven Väth (born 26 October 1964 near Frankfurt, Germany) is a DJ who has produced an extensive range of work since his career began in 1982. He was also one of the founders of legendary trance music labels Harthouse and the now-defunct Eye Q, as well as being among the very first DJs to play trance records. In 1995 Mixmag rated his album Accident in Paradise one of the top-50 dance albums of all time; although the title track is a fast techno piece, the rest is far more sedate, such as the track "Coda," which features merely a flute and a harpsichord.

Väth is also known as R U Ready and Sam Vision. He has been a member of the groups 16 Bit, Astral Pilot, Barbarella, the Essence of Nature, Metal Master, Metal Masters, Mosaic, and Off. Today he is the owner of the Cocoon Music Event GmbH, which contains his new Label, Cocoon Recordings. He is also the owner of the Cocoon Club in Frankfurt.

Something about Dave Clarke:
The ‘gothy cool’ of Bauhaus’s ‘She’s In Parties’ has been resurrected on a stand-out album track with some vocal assistance from Berlin’s favorite daughters, Chicks On Speed. "It’s a new song, written around the hook ‘she’s in parties’" says Dave. "And we had a great time recording it." Clarke first met the Chicks seven years ago at the infamous Ultraschall club. "I was pretending to be the doorman, people’d be coming up to me saying (mock German accent) "Ven is Dave Clarke on?" We had a few drunken nights out with DJ Hell and Upstart, drinking Cognac and bourbon, going to 80’s soul clubs and playing chess. It sounds terribly communistic, doesn’t it?"

His connection with the art-edge of electro doesn’t stop there. In 2001, Clarke released the World Service compilation, featuring a still unbeaten new-school electro tracklisting. Hacker, Fischerspooner and Adult. were all present and correct, some time before Trendy London caught on. "There were loads of compilations that came out, six, twelve, even eighteen months later, all with a very similar tracklisting. It pissed me off. At that time, there was so much exciting music coming out and it wasn’t being serviced by DJs or radio or the press." Obviously, the record-buying public agreed and they sold 70,000 copies.

Dave Clarke - Fuse 16-09-2005 by Dave Clarke DJ Sets

Something about Carl Cox:
I can't remember a time without the strains of soul music drifting through our house. With both parents coming from Barbados I was brought up very much in tune with a natural party ethos that went hand in hand with a love of good music. My earliest musical memories are of Booker T and the MGs, Aretha Franklin and, of course the great Elvis, and I used to hijack my parents collection of 70's soul 45's and get the whole family grooving round the lounge! I guess the early signs were there - my passion for music combined with an over-whelming desire to entertain as many people as possible.

By 10 I had well and truly caught the bug and was spending every bit of my pocket money on soul and funk records. I got my first pair of decks (just the 2!) by the age of 15 and I started to play as many parties as I could, discovering that I could buzz off a crowd whilst funding my habit at the same time. As the 70's became the 80's I followed the musical trend from soul to disco to hip-hop but it wasn't really until I moved to Brighton in 1986 that I discovered, along with so many others, the pure thrill of acid house.

The 'Summer Of Love' was special for me in more ways than one. It was at the Sunrise rave on the outskirts of London in 1988 that I had had my biggest breakthrough yet. I was already something of a regular on the infamous M1/Orbital rave circuit but it was at Sunrise that I had the idea to hook up a third deck. At 10.30am on a hazy Sunday morning I managed to tempt 15,000 partied out ravers back onto their weary feet and kick the party back into action - it was an amazing experience- and since then my phone has not stopped ringing with offers for 'The 3 Deck Wizard'. I was fortunate enough to participate in many of the events that have gone down in history as defining moments in the history of UK club culture, such as playing the opening night at Rampling's legendary Shoom, running The Project with Oakie as well as holding a residency at Brighton's ZAP club.

With my reputation as a DJ well and truly secured I was able to turn my attentions towards producing. Initially signing to Perfecto I had my first hit in 1992 with 'I Want You' and, believe me, no one was more surprised than me when I found myself performing on Top Of The Pops when my record peaked at number 23 in the UK charts!!

Despite the fact that the follow up 'Does It Feel Good To You' also charted in the top 40, commercial success was never what I had been aiming for, it was all somewhat too far removed from the reality and buzz of setting a dance floor alight. Whilst fellow spinners such as Grooverider and Fabio moved from raves into Jungle, choosing to focus on a very UK and London orientated sound, I couldn't escape the American and European influences that had always been there whilst I was growing up. I have always been very globally minded which comes across in my choice of music, which I use to cross physical and cultural boundaries to bring people together. Essentially my heart lies with house and techno and it was for this reason that I chose to take a back seat from my impending career as a pop star and be true to myself by going underground and re-discovering my roots.
