It is Monday the 30th of July 2012 and we are very happy to welcome back Marcel Dettmann on the CLR Podcast. The internationally acclaimed dj/producer whose life and career are closely related to Berlin´s mythic Berghain club, has taken some time out of his busy schedule and has recorded another exclusive set for us. Marcel has been a restless Techno ambassador and an Ostgut / Berghain resident since the club opened in 1999. For those who don´t know, Ostgut is not only the original name of this world-famous “temple of boom”, but also gave name to the legendary Ostgut Tonträger Label which released Marcel´s first record in 2006. In the same year he opened his own label MDR (Marcel Dettmann Records), which has become a reliable and often hailed institution in the global Techno scene. Marcel Dettmann and MDR releases have been supported and charted by countless renowned djs world-wide and there are several exiting new projects soon to come. Something about Len Faki:
When Len Faki moved to Berlin in 2003, he could already look back at years of fruitful productivity and the management of two highly acclaimed Techno labels: Monoid and Feis. His move to Berlin marked a decisive turning point in his career. With Len Series he founded an independent platform for his idea of Techno music. The basic concept, including its sub labels Figure and Podium, allows him to e ...xplore musical depths and artistic freedom.

His strong appearances at OstGut (Berlin) culminated in his residency at Berghain (the former OstGut), a position which further fuelled his open-minded approach as both DJ and producer. The characteristic extra-long DJ sets force him to vary in tone, style and feed him with extra inspiration.

At Berghain he also launched his own night on a regular basis to which he invites his colleagues from all over the world. As a logical progression, this night led to establishing his sublabel Podium with releases by Raudive, Shinedoe, Tony Rohr and 2000 And One. From its inception the label’s output was highly received and revered, setting a new standard for cutting edge, exciting Techno experimentation. Len Faki’s own tracks “My Black Sheep” and Odyssee II” turned into massive club hits in the years 2007 and 2008.

While Figure originally stood as a platform for Len’s own work in combination with remixes by friendly artists, Podium aims to release original works by both Faki and other artists. It is an open platform catering for a variety of electronic music. It is clearly directed towards the Techno floor, but always with a rich diversity in mind. After a short creative break, Len Faki has re-launched Figure for it to be more consistent with the idea and policy already established with Podium, meaning to be stylistically open and to be more artist oriented. As a consequence, Len has released music by such established artists as Radio Slave and Luke Slater, but never lost the next generation of talented producers, as numerous eps by Chymera, A.Mochi, Pfirter or Tony Lionni have proven. Consistent with this orientation, Len will relaunch his label Figure after a short creative break with a diversified repertoire. A broad stylistic range has been and is the main objective of both labels.

Marcel Dettmann is back on the CLR Podcast with another one of his distinctive and thrilling Techno sets. The Berlin-born, widely known and much respected DJ / producer will play at the CLR hosted Techno tent on the Solar Weekend Festival on upcoming Sunday, August 7th in the Netherlands, together with a great line-up of label artists and guests. And as a special 11th anniversary treat, CLR offers you the entire Traversable Wormhole remix package of CLR35, including Marcel Dettmann´s remix - all week long for only 1,11 € at the CLR web-shop. If you want to read more about this intriguing artist, please continue below.
Ruff, rugged and raw. Mentioning Marcel Dettmannas well as his feeling for and vision of electronic music, his way of dealing with it, is impossible without these attributes. Whether you take his DJ sets (Marcel has been made a resident DJ at the old Ostgut and also at Berghain from the very start), Dettmann’s productions for the self-conducted MDR label, his remixes for the likes of Fever Ray, Junior Boys, Modeselektor as well as Scuba, or if nothing else his debut long player for Ostgut Ton into account, all the various contrasts and distinctions that come with it are manifested in these qualities.
Techno as Marcel Dettmann defines it, is neither a movement without history nor wistful nostalgia. In the hands of the Berliner, the well-known game of hi-hats, bass lines and kick drums draws its tension and momentum from a historically grown tradition and the conscious decision to break the rules. Reformation and solid construction outplays the use of any gimmicks. Dettmann pours Detroit’s oil into European engines, puts British bass music under the control of Chicago’s very own Jack, cuts classics with abstract nuances and connects yesterday with tomorrow and today. In the unrelenting manner of a great DJ, he generates moods and connections that are age- and classless, but never irrelevant or tasteless. Marcel Dettmann links up the art of improvisation with careful preparation and finally gives techno some of its often painfully missed serious physical constitution back.
